On August 14, 2025, a devastating cloudburst struck Chositi village in Jammu and Kashmir’s Kishtwar district, triggering severe flash floods and widespread destruction along the route of the Machail Mata pilgrimage. At least 44 people, including two CISF jawans, have lost their lives, 167 have been injured, and over 220 people are still missing. The disaster has thrown the pilgrimage trail into chaos, with nearly 1,200 people present at the spot when the tragedy occurred.

Rescue and relief operations are underway with involvement of NDRF, SDRF, Indian Army (including the White Knight Corps), local administration, and medical teams. Authorities are racing against time to find survivors, evacuate stranded pilgrims and locals, and provide urgent assistance amidst damaged roads and disrupted communication.

Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and Union Home Minister Amit Shah are closely monitoring the situation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has expressed his condolences and assured full support for relief efforts.
