The Supreme Court has directed the Election Commission to publish the names of 65 lakh voters deleted from the electoral rolls, along with the reasons for their removal, by the 20th of the month. This order upholds the citizens’ right to information, a development celebrated by the opposition. The Congress has called the ruling a “slap on the face of the Election Commission and its boss, the Bharatiya Janata Party and Narendra Modi.” In court, the EC had argued that the Constitution does not mandate them to publish these names. The BJP has stated its respect for the apex court’s decision.
