In a major escalation of the Madurai Deepam controversy, the DMK has submitted an impeachment motion against Madras High Court Justice G.R. Swaminathan. DMK MP Tiruchi Siva confirms that the notice, signed by 107 Lok Sabha MPs, is based on ’13 charges’ of alleged bias and ideological alignment. While Home Minister Amit Shah slammed the opposition for ‘appeasement politics’ and attacking the judiciary, the DMK maintains the move is a constitutional right. The controversy stems from the judge’s order regarding the lighting of a lamp at the disputed Thiruparankundram site.
