In Bangladesh, two starkly contrasting images of crowds have emerged amid recent unrest. One shows the massive, emotional funeral of Sharif Osman Hadi – a prominent student leader and spokesperson of Inqilab Mancha, who played a key role in the 2024 uprising that ousted Sheikh Hasina. On other hand thousands gathered in Dhaka on December 20, 2025, for his state-honored funeral at Manik Mia Avenue, attended by interim leader Dr. Muhammad Yunus. In a moving speech, Yunus said Hadi would never be forgotten and would inspire generations, emphasizing a collective commitment to his ideals of dignity and democracy. Hadi was laid to rest beside the grave of national poet Kazi Nazrul Islam at Dhaka University – a rare honor. The other image is one of horrific mob violence: the lynching of Dipu Chandra Das, a young Hindu factory worker in Mymensingh’s area, over alleged blasphemy accusations. These events highlight the deep tensions in Bangladesh following Hadi’s assassination on December 12. His death sparked protests, arson attacks on media offices, and communal incidents – raising serious concerns about minority safety, law and order, and rising extremism. The question remains: How can hatred and humanity coexist in the same society? Bangladesh is at a crossroads – mourning a youth icon while grappling with brutal intolerance against minorities.
