Tensions escalated in central Kolkata today, December 23, 2025, as police foiled a massive protest march organized by the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) and the Bongiyo Hindu Jagran Manch (HJM). The ‘Hindu Hunkar Padayatra,’ which began at Sealdah station, was heading toward the Bangladesh Deputy High Commission to protest the brutal mob lynching and burning of Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh, Bangladesh.
The situation turned volatile at Beckbagan, near Park Circus, when hundreds of activists tried to breach multi-layered police barricades and iron railings. To prevent the crowd from reaching the diplomatic mission, riot police resorted to a lathicharge and used human chains to push back the demonstrators. At least 12 protesters were arrested, and several individuals, including police personnel, sustained minor injuries during the scuffle. Protesters burned effigies of Bangladesh’s interim leader Muhammad Yunus and called for a complete boycott of Bangladeshi goods.
