A day after the Delhi High Court’s sharp remarks on Delhi-NCR’s toxic air, the Centre’s stand on air purifier GST has sparked fresh questions in a PIL hearing on severe air pollution. The government told the court that air purifiers are not ‘medical devices’ and warned that any tax cut could ‘open a Pandora’s Box’, stressing that GST rates and classification fall under the GST Council’s domain. But the bench flagged affordability, asking why a 10,000–15,000 rupee air purifier can’t be made cheaper for low-income families, and cited breathing ‘21,000 times’ a day while living in a public health emergency.
