Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah on Thursday strongly opposed the Kerala government’s proposed Malayalam Language Bill, 2025, which seeks to make Malayalam the compulsory first language even in Kannada-medium schools in the state, calling it a “coercive approach” that violates constitutional safeguards for linguistic minorities.
In a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, Siddaramaiah described the proposed legislation as a matter of “serious concern,” arguing that mandating Malayalam as the first language in Kannada-medium schools infringes upon the rights of linguistic minorities.
