The Patna High Court has held Bihar Police guilty of illegally detaining a juvenile student for over two months and ordered the state to pay ₹5 lakh as compensation. The case relates to a village clash in Madhepura district, where the minor was arrested despite being cleared in the chargesheet. The court strongly criticised the police and the magistrate for violating legal procedure and the child’s right to life and liberty. It ruled that courts cannot remain mute spectators in such cases and directed an administrative inquiry, ordering recovery of compensation from erring police officers’ salaries.
