The death toll has tragically risen to 61 after the remains of 30 individuals were recovered from a single shop, Dubai Crockery, located on the mezzanine floor. Shivani Sharma notes that ‘the building was not up to the fire safety norms and there are at least 74 people that are still missing’ following the blaze that began on January 17th. The fire, which started in the basement of the wholesale and retail market, took nearly 36 hours to contain due to the presence of flammable fabric shops. Rescue operations are ongoing as workers use hammers to break through burnt walls to locate further remains. Officials fear the final death count could reach 100 as many families remain uncertain about the whereabouts of their loved ones in the Sabdar area.
