Following Donald Trump’s surprise February 2 announcement and his claims that India would pivot from Russian oil to US and Venezuelan crude, Russia has responded by asserting that New Delhi remains free to source energy globally. Despite the 25% extra “penal tariff” previously imposed by the Trump administration to discourage ties with Moscow, real-time data from Kpler shows that India continues to be a major buyer of Russian oil, accounting for nearly one-third of its total imports. While the new deal has slashed overall tariffs from 50% to 18%, questions remain about India’s energy future and whether it can truly balance its long-term strategic partnership with Washington while maintaining its beneficial hydrocarbon trade with Russia.
