In a historic shift for Bangladesh, the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), led by Tarique Rahman, has secured a landslide victory in the general elections held on February 12, 2026. After nearly 20 years, the BNP returns to power, having already crossed the 200-seat mark well above the 151 required for a majority. This election, the first since the 2024 uprising, also included a landmark referendum where over 65% of voters approved the “July Charter,” paving the way for sweeping constitutional reforms such as a two-term limit for Prime Ministers and the creation of a 100-member Upper House. Global leaders, including Indian PM Narendra Modi, Pakistan’s Shehbaz Sharif, and US Ambassador Brent T. Christensen, have extended their congratulations, expressing a shared commitment to a democratic, stable, and prosperous Bangladesh. Watch the video.
