In a significant political shift ahead of the Tamil Nadu assembly elections, the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) has officially joined the DMK-led alliance. DMDK General Secretary Premalatha Vijayakanth met with Chief Minister MK Stalin at the DMK headquarters to formalise the tie-up. The move follows intense speculation regarding whether the DMDK would align with the NDA or the DMK. Key factors in the negotiation included the DMDK’s long-standing demand for a Rajya Sabha seat, with six seats currently falling vacant in the state. The DMK believes the partnership will help secure Telugu-speaking voters and counter the influence of the PMK in northern Tamil Nadu, particularly among the Vanniyar community. Additionally, the alliance aims to consolidate Mukulathur community votes in the southern regions. This marks the first time the party founded by the late ‘Captain’ Vijayakanth has aligned with the DMK, a strategic move intended to leverage the late leader’s enduring charisma and strengthen the ruling coalition’s electoral arithmetic against the AIADMK-BJP combine.
