In a landmark verdict, the Supreme Court has allowed the parents of 32-year-old Harish Rana, who has been in a vegetative state for 13 years, to withdraw life-sustaining nutrition. This marks the first time such permission has been granted since the top court legalised passive euthanasia in 2018. Harish Rana lost his mobility after an accident left him in a comatose state. The court, whilst expressing sympathy, pronounced the verdict allowing the withdrawal of nutritional support. The ruling has reignited debates over the legality and morality of euthanasia in India. The Supreme Court has also urged the central government to consider bringing legislation on passive euthanasia. India legalised passive euthanasia less than a decade ago, with the 2018 judgment spelling out directions for patients diagnosed as terminally ill, both with and without living wills.
