Iranian crude oil has reached Indian waters for the first time in nearly seven years, after two sanctioned supertankers carrying oil from Iran anchored near Paradip port in Odisha and Sikka port in Gujarat. The very large crude carriers Felicity and Jaya, loaded with Iranian oil from Kharg Island, arrived following a temporary US sanctions waiver that allowed limited sale of oil already at sea to stabilise global markets. However, the development comes amid heightened geopolitical tension, as the US has now announced a blockade of Iranian ports after peace talks collapsed, raising questions over how many more cargoes can reach India before the waiver expires on April 19.
