The Constitution 131st Amendment Bill, aimed at giving reservation rights to women, was defeated in the Lok Sabha.
The government said it was disappointed that the opposition blocked what it called a historic chance to empower women.
After the defeat, the government also decided not to move forward with the Union Territories Laws Amendment Bill 2026 and the Delimitation Bill 2026. The House was then adjourned to April 18, 2026.
The opposition, however, accused the government of bringing the bill knowing it would fail, only to blame the opposition later.
They also questioned why the women’s reservation law passed in 2023 was not implemented immediately. According to the opposition, the government may be using the bill as a reason to carry out delimitation before the 2029 elections.
