The massive fire that broke out on April 15 in Lucknow’s Vikas Nagar, destroying around 250 slum huts, has now reached the Allahabad High Court. The court has raised sharp questions to the Uttar Pradesh government—how 1,455 people were living on PWD land, what the administration was doing about the encroachment, and who provided electricity and gas connections.
The court has directed the District Magistrate, Municipal Corporation, Chief Medical Officer, and Fire Department to submit detailed replies by May 30. It has also ordered immediate relief for the victims, including food, shelter, and proper medical care.
The fire is believed to have spread after multiple cylinder blasts. Tragically, two children lost their lives in the incident, and compensation has been announced for their families.
The court has made it clear that accountability will be fixed, and an investigation may also be ordered if needed. The next hearing in the case is scheduled for May 17.
