The recent failure to pass the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha has sparked a political dispute between the ruling government and the opposition. The government proposed fast-tracking the 33 percent women’s reservation for the 2029 elections by delinking delimitation from the census and applying a 50 percent formula. This move aimed to address concerns from southern states regarding potential seat losses due to population control. However, the opposition rejected the proposal, highlighting that the specific formula was not explicitly written into the bill, despite verbal assurances from the Home Minister on the floor of the house. Knowing they lacked the required two-thirds majority of 360 votes, the government saw the bill stall at 298 votes. As both sides vie for the crucial support of women voters ahead of upcoming state elections in West Bengal and Tamil Nadu, the Prime Minister is scheduled to address the nation to outline the government’s stance on the stalled legislation.
