A major fire broke out at the crude distillation unit of the HPCL Rajasthan Refinery Limited in Barmer, a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi was scheduled to inaugurate the facility. The Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited initiated an internal investigation, stating that the fire was likely caused by a hydrocarbon leak from a valve at the heat exchanger circuit. The National Investigation Agency and a fact-finding team from the Ministry of Home Affairs have joined the probe to determine if the incident was a result of negligence, material fatigue, or calculated sabotage. The greenfield integrated refinery and petrochemical complex, built at a cost of 79,000 crore rupees, is a joint venture between Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited and the Rajasthan government. Designed to process heavier crudes from the Barmer basin, the facility aims to reduce India’s dependence on imported fuels and strengthen energy security. The Rajasthan Chief Minister and Chief Secretary visited the site to assess the situation following the incident.
