Speculation is growing over a major reshuffle and expansion of the Modi cabinet as the central government approaches its two-year mark on June 9. Discussions have intensified regarding significant changes in both the Union Council of Ministers and the Bharatiya Janata Party organisation. Currently, the cabinet has 72 ministers, with a constitutional limit of 81, leaving room for new inductions. The anticipated reshuffle is expected to align with the formation of a new team under the BJP President, who took charge in January. Existing ministers may be reassigned to organisational roles, while party leaders could be inducted into the cabinet. The changes are likely to focus on social engineering ahead of the 2027 assembly elections in seven states, including Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Gujarat. The new organisational team and cabinet expansion are expected to prioritise youth leaders under the age of 50 and increase the representation of women in key leadership roles.
