Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay has announced several public welfare decisions within forty-eight hours of taking office. The move includes the closure of 717 government-owned TASMAC liquor stores located within a 500-meter radius of places of worship, educational institutions, and bus stands. The Vijay administration has also ordered a crackdown on roadblock celebrations and banned public posters, giant cutouts, and hoardings to improve civic discipline. Additionally, the Chief Minister increased the free electricity provision from 100 units under the previous DMK regime to 200 units. Focusing on women’s safety and youth welfare, the government has established the Singa Penn Force for women’s protection and set up anti-drug units in every district to curb the availability of narcotics in schools. India Today’s Pramod notes that the closure of TASMAC shops addresses an expectation among women voters who supported Vijay to curb the liquor menace, an issue previously unfulfilled by past governments despite promises made during the 2016 elections.
