A demolition drive is underway in Mumbai’s Bandra East to clear illegal structures on railway land adjacent to the Bandra Terminus. The action follows a Bombay High Court order dated May 5, which permitted the removal of unauthorised encroachments while ensuring the protection of eligible slum dwellers identified in the 2021 surveys. Over 400 security personnel, including the Mumbai Police, Railway Protection Force, and Government Railway Police, have been deployed to maintain law and order during the operation. Fire brigade teams, ambulances, and barricades are also on standby to prevent any untoward incidents. The cleared land will facilitate the expansion of the Bandra Terminus and allow more trains to operate, aligning with plans to introduce additional mail express trains from the Mumbai area. Eligible project-affected persons will be rehabilitated by the Mumbai Metropolitan Region Development Authority under the Mumbai One project, which includes the development of line six of the Western Railway. The demolition drive is expected to continue for three days.
