After Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif’s China visit, a joint statement by China and Pakistan has once again brought the Kashmir issue into focus. In the statement, China described Jammu & Kashmir as a historical dispute that should be resolved peacefully under the UN Charter and bilateral agreements. The statement also mentioned cooperation on “transboundary water resources” and reaffirmed support for the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC). India strongly rejected these remarks, calling them “unwarranted references”, and reiterated that Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh are integral parts of India. New Delhi also opposed CPEC projects passing through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir and questioned how China and Pakistan could talk about shared water cooperation when the rivers flow through Indian territory.
