In this Patagonia Documentary I explore Torres del Paine & Puerto Natales with a local photographer to uncover the hidden side of Chilean Patagonia.

This is the story of Puerto Natales — the town that only exists because 300 sheep arrived from the Falkland Islands in 1877. Together with photographer Timothy, I hike trails almost nobody does, discover a 10,000-year-old mystery inside the Milodón Cave, explore a Victorian-era factory turned luxury hotel, and sail the fjord that a Spanish explorer named ‘Last Hope’ in 1557 — all the way to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers.

This Puerto Natales Documentary is the second episode of my Documentary Series called “Pioneers of Patagonia.” While most visitors focus on the well-known treks inside Torres del Paine National Park, Patagonia’s history runs far deeper. Each episode follows a different destination and the pioneers who shaped it.
In this episode I arrive at Timothy’s home above Puerto Natales, hike Cerro Dorothea, take the bus into Torres del Paine National Park for the Mirador Ferrier, visit the Bories museum, rent an e-bike to cycle 27km to Laguna Sofia for a hike and condor spotting at Cerro Benitez, explore the Cueva del Milodón where a German settler discovered preserved skin of a giant ground sloth in 1895, and finish with a boat trip through the Última Esperanza fjord to the Balmaceda and Serrano glaciers inside Bernardo O’Higgins National Park — including whiskey with glacier ice and Cordero Patagónico at a local estancia.
You can use this documentary to plan your own trip to Puerto Natales and Torres del Paine alongside with my Chile guide “Chile Your Way” which contains every trail, hotel, restaurant, activity and itinerary from this trip plus interactive Google Maps lists so you can plan your own route.

The whole trip was executed over the course of several weeks using local transport, buses, e-bikes, boats and guided excursions. I organized everything myself and funded the whole trip on my own.
