The West Bengal High Court has refused to stay the appointment of the rebel leader as the Leader of the Opposition in the state assembly. The ruling party had challenged the speaker’s decision, arguing that the expelled leader could not appoint himself to the post. The petitioner, who was the party’s original nominee, filed the case, but the court has currently ordered status quo. The ruling party has been asked to file an affidavit, and the next hearing is scheduled for June 16. Until then, the rebel leader will continue as the Leader of the Opposition, bringing relief to the rebel camp and the newly elected speaker in the ongoing political turmoil.
