A political crisis is brewing in Maharashtra as an opposition faction faces a potential split. During a parliamentary party meeting convened in the national capital, only a fraction of the elected representatives marked their presence. Six rebel parliamentarians skipped the gathering, raising speculations about a mass defection. The absence of these six members constitutes exactly two-thirds of the faction’s total strength in the lower house, a number sufficient to bypass the anti-defection law. The rebellion is driven by dissatisfaction over the party leadership abandoning its core ideological principles and remaining inaccessible to its members. In a bid to gauge loyalty, the party leadership is now mandating signatures from attending members to identify loyalists. The dissenting parliamentarians might merge with the rival ruling faction or align with the broader ruling alliance. The next twenty-four hours remain important as calls and negotiations continue to prevent a division within the faction.
