The war of words between the US and Iran has intensified after President Donald Trump said he had called off a potential military strike on Iran. Trump claimed that Iran and other Middle Eastern countries had asked the US to halt attacks as terms of a possible deal had been agreed upon, including reopening the Strait of Hormuz. Iranian media, however, rejected Trump’s claims and portrayed his announcement as a US retreat. Fars and Mehr sharply criticised Trump, while Iranian reports claimed Tehran had made no such request. Meanwhile, tensions over the Strait of Hormuz and rising oil prices continue.
