On August 15, hundreds of people associated with the Qaumi Insaaf Morcha protested near the Chandigarh-Mohali border, demanding the release of long-incarcerated Sikh prisoners, whom they refer to as ‘Bandi Singhs’. Protesters tried to move towards Chandigarh through YPS Chowk but were stopped by barricades. Police used water cannons and tear gas after some protesters allegedly tried to break the barricades. Shiromani Akali Dal (Amritsar) president Simranjit Singh Mann was also detained while allegedly trying to reach Punjab Raj Bhavan. The protest also included a demand for 10-day parole for Jagtar Singh Hawara. Protesters have now called for a Punjab bandh on August 21.
