LIVE | Kharcha Paani | E20 petrol has been mandatory in India, but a new Reuters report has raised fresh questions about fuel contamination, car damage and the gap between what automakers said privately and what was said publicly. Emails accessed by Reuters reportedly show concerns from Maruti Suzuki, Tata Motors and Mahindra about chloride and moisture contamination in fuel samples, including concerns about corrosion, fuel-system components and possible damage. At the same time, Maruti Suzuki publicly said there was no concern over wear and tear, corrosion or damage to car parts that come in contact with E20 fuel. Petroleum Minister Hardeep Singh Puri has also acknowledged that fuel contamination can happen, while government testing reportedly found far fewer cases than those indicated by industry data. In this episode of Kharcha Paani, we break down the Reuters report, the emails between Maruti, Tata, Mahindra and SIAM, the controversy around chloride and moisture contamination, the difference between government and industry testing data, and the unanswered questions around underground storage tanks, pipelines and fuel quality standards. If E20 petrol is safe, then where is the contamination coming from? And when government statements and private industry emails appear to tell different stories, who is responsible for guaranteeing the quality of the fuel going into your car?
