The Tamil Nadu government has extended paid maternity leave from 12 weeks to 365 days for women government employees having a third child, bringing it on par with benefits available for the first two children. The decision aims to address declining total fertility rates across southern states, with Tamil Nadu recording a rate of 1.7 children per woman. Similar demographic concerns have been highlighted in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana amid rising apprehensions over upcoming parliamentary delimitation. While the initiative received broad support within the state, questions have been raised regarding deviations from the two-child policy norm.
