Rahul Gandhi has once again taken on the government over the alleged use of pellet guns during the July 20 Parliament March protest. After bringing alleged pellet fragments recovered from student protester Sahil’s body before the media, Rahul Gandhi sat on a protest outside the CP Police Station, demanding that an FIR be registered.

The Congress has alleged that Sahil was repeatedly directed from one police station to another when he tried to file a complaint. The BJP, meanwhile, has accused Rahul Gandhi and the Congress of using the issue to divert attention from the ongoing political controversy over Vande Mataram.

So why is Rahul Gandhi directly targeting Union Home Minister Amit Shah? Is the pellet gun controversy becoming a larger political battle over accountability, student protests and the government’s response? And has Rahul Gandhi realised that sustained political pressure can force the government to respond?
