A major tragedy was narrowly averted when the steering rod of an ST bus travelling from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar to Surat suddenly broke on the dangerous Kannad Ghat route. The bus crashed into a safety barrier and stopped right at the edge of a deep gorge with 59 passengers on board.
Four passengers sitting in the front suffered minor injuries and were rushed to Chalisgaon Rural Hospital. The remaining 55 passengers were safely evacuated. Police and traffic teams later cleared the bus with the help of a crane.
This shocking incident has once again raised serious questions about the maintenance and fitness of ST buses plying on hazardous ghat routes in Maharashtra.
