Following a building collapse in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, students residing in nearby paying guest accommodations face severe harassment as property owners refuse to return security deposits and advance rent. In house number 214, a six-storey building deemed unsafe by residents, students packed their belongings to vacate following safety concerns triggered by the collapse of building number 11 just metres away. Students Utkarsh and Pranav stated that the property owner initially agreed to refund twenty thousand rupees combining rent and security, but later reneged, demanding proof of an MCD notice and citing political connections. A confrontation with the owner, identified as Ritu, revealed she claimed rent was adjusted and accused students of staying without payment despite transaction records. Displaced students, including those relocated from adjacent damaged buildings, remain stranded with luggage, highlighting the exploitation and lack of administrative support for students forced to evacuate fragile structures.
