The Supreme Court of India refused to stay its directive requiring the Tamil Nadu government to identify land for opening Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalayas across all districts in the state, firmly addressing the state’s pushback over its two-language policy and concerns regarding Hindi imposition. A bench comprising Justice B.V. Nagarathna and Justice A.G. Masih emphasized that learning Hindi alongside regional languages expands opportunities rather than lowering educational standards, urging the state to shift its mindset and engage constructively with the Centre. Despite Tamil Nadu’s arguments defending its autonomy, historic language stance, and financial reservations, the apex court upheld that state cooperation is vital, noting the Centre’s assurance to bear all operational expenses.
