The Election Commission’s ECINET software has come under scrutiny after Maharashtra Chief Electoral Officer S Chockalingam sought changes to give Electoral Registration Officers greater flexibility during the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process. According to reports, his September 24 communication sought provisions including exemption from personal hearings in appropriate cases and greater flexibility regarding supporting documents and logical discrepancies. The Election Commission has since moved to ease parts of the notice process, including allowing Booth Level Officers to collect documents from voters’ homes and upload them to ECINET for ERO decisions. The ECI has also ordered a review of ECINET to check its compliance with relevant laws and rules.
