Odisha Governor Controversy: A political controversy has erupted over a statement by Braj Mohan Ram, the newly appointed Governor of Odisha. After his appointment was announced, Ram said he would work to make the BJP’s Scheduled Caste (SC) Morcha more active in Odisha and try to secure more votes for the party. His remarks drew criticism from the opposition Biju Janata Dal (BJD) and Congress, who questioned his impartiality as a constitutional authority. Former Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik also took a swipe at the statement, expressing hope that Ram would uphold constitutional dignity and perform his duties impartially.
Amid the controversy, Ram issued a clarification on October 15, saying he was now above party politics and would not work for any particular political party. In this video, we explain the controversy, the opposition’s objections, and what the Indian Constitution expects from a state Governor. We also examine the Supreme Court’s observations on the constitutional role of Governors in the B.P. Singhal vs Union of India case.
