Kolkata is mourning after a deadly stampede at the Chorbagan Durga Puja pandal claimed 19 lives and left several people injured, according to the latest figures cited in the report. Heavy rain reportedly triggered a rush of devotees, leading to panic and chaos inside the pandal. Eyewitnesses have raised concerns over crowd management, entry and exit routes, police deployment and emergency evacuation arrangements. The Puja committee’s general secretary and other office bearers have reportedly resigned, while police have detained 12 people, including organisers, as the investigation continues. CCTV footage and forensic evidence are being examined to establish what went wrong and whether safety lapses contributed to the tragedy. The state government has announced relief for affected families, while Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced financial assistance for the deceased’s next of kin and injured victims. Authorities have urged people to avoid the area and not spread unverified information as the probe continues.
