Qin Gang, China’s Foreign Minister, has been missing from public view for more than three weeks, generating curiosity both inside and outside of China regarding his location. With China’s foreign minister absent for an extended period of time, President Xi Jinping finds it difficult to portray China as a world power.
Qin’s most recent public appearances were on June 25 in Beijing, where he met with officials from Vietnam, Russia, and Sri Lanka. He has cancelled other meetings since then, including the annual Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) session of foreign ministers last week in Indonesia. Wang Yi, his line manager and current Politburo member, attended the sessions on his behalf.
