A massive cloudburst occurred this afternoon in the Harshal area of Uttarkashi, leading to widespread destruction. Initial reports indicate that 15 to 20 houses and guest houses were swept away by the intense rainfall. Rescue operations are underway with personnel from NDRF, ITBP, and the Indian Army on site. Officially, four lives have been lost, and more than 50 individuals are reported missing. The India Meteorological Department had issued a red alert for the region, but cloudbursts are acute events that are difficult to predict due to their localized nature. The topographical features of the Garhwal region, combined with anthropogenic activities like dam construction and road projects for Shardham Yatra, contribute to the area’s susceptibility to such events. Natural factors, including retracting glaciers leaving loose soil due to climate change, also play a role.
