Heavy overnight rainfall has brought Kolkata to a standstill, causing severe waterlogging and disrupting life ahead of Durga Puja. The record rainfall, measuring up to 250 millimetres in 24 hours, has resulted in the deaths of five people due to electrocution. Many Puja pandals across the city are completely flooded. The downpour has inundated residential areas, with water entering houses and leaving roads submerged in knee-deep water. This has led to major traffic snarls and the suspension of metro services in several parts of the city. The weather department has forecast that heavy to very heavy rains will continue in the southern districts of West Bengal until the 27th of September, indicating more challenges ahead for the city’s residents and Puja organisers.
