Texas Republican leader Alexander Duncan sparked controversy after calling a 90-foot Hanuman statue in Sugar Land a “false Hindu god” in his post on X. The statue, known as the “Statue of Union,” was unveiled in 2024 at the Shri Ashtalakshmi Temple and is among the tallest Hindu monuments in the U.S. Duncan’s remarks, citing America as a Christian nation and opposing idol worship, drew sharp criticism from the Hindu American Foundation and community groups. Critics reminded him that the U.S. Constitution ensures religious freedom. The issue has reignited debates on religion, immigration, and minority rights in America.
