Iran has escalated strikes across West Asia under new Supreme Leader Ayatollah Mojtaba Khamenei, who vowed to avenge martyrs following U.S. and Israeli actions. Iranian attacks have targeted energy infrastructure and shipping in the Persian Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil chokepoint. Incidents include attacks on oil tankers near Iraq’s Al-Faw port and a Thai-flagged vessel, causing fires. Drone strikes have also hit fuel storage facilities in Oman’s Salalah port, Bahrain’s Muharraq island, and Dubai. Khamenei stated Iran will maintain leverage by blockading the Strait of Hormuz but will only target military bases. U.S. President Donald Trump affirmed his priority is preventing a nuclear-armed Iran. Meanwhile, India’s External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar engaged in discussions with his Iranian counterpart to ensure shipping safety and protect India’s energy security, as a significant portion of its LPG imports transit the strait.
