Iran has expanded its military operations to target non-US assets in the UAE, striking three major ports including Dubai’s Jebel Ali port, Abu Dhabi’s Khalifa port, and Fujairah port. An Iranian drone has hit UAE’s Fujairah port, setting the oil facility on fire. Fujairah handles nearly 2% of global fuel demand and exported more than 1.7 million barrels per day of crude oil and refined fuels on average last year, equal to about 1.7% of daily world demand. Iran claims these UAE ports were used by US troops as hideouts and to launch attacks on Kharg Island, which was struck on March 14th. Previously, Iran had only targeted US military bases and embassies in Gulf countries. Abu Dhabi National Oil Corporation, which produces around 750,000 barrels and contributes one third of UAE’s oil trade, was also targeted. Iran has issued evacuation warnings for the three UAE ports and threatened to target any asset related to the United States, including financial institutions.
