Ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections, the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) process has resulted in the removal of nearly 90.8 lakh names from the voter list, roughly 12% of the state’s electorate.

While the Election Commission describes this as a “purification drive” to remove duplicates and deceased voters, the sheer scale has sparked widespread panic and spontaneous citizens’ protests. From the Supreme Court to the streets of Kolkata, the question remains: Is this an administrative cleanup or a systemic disenfranchisement of legitimate citizens?
