A massive fire broke out in a coastal water village in Malaysia’s Sabah state on Borneo Island, destroying approximately 1,000 wooden houses built on stilts. The devastating blaze has displaced thousands of people, with police estimating that over 9,000 residents have been affected. The settlement is home to some of the country’s poorest communities, including indigenous and stateless groups. Drone footage from the scene revealed thick black smoke engulfing the area as the fire spread rapidly through the closely packed homes. Thankfully, authorities have reported no casualties or deaths in the incident. In response to the crisis, Malaysia’s Prime Minister announced that the federal government is actively coordinating with local authorities to provide basic assistance and arrange temporary relocation for the displaced victims.
