Jahangir Khan, a close aide of Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Abhishek Banerjee and the party’s candidate from the Falta constituency, has been brought to Kolkata after being arrested near the Indo-Nepal border by the Special Task Force (STF) of the West Bengal Police. He is scheduled to be produced in court today. Khan faces seven FIRs, with charges including EVM tampering, taping the BJP symbol on EVM machines, and voter intimidation during the assembly elections. Following the allegations, re-polling was ordered in the Falta constituency, but Khan pulled out of the electoral race just days before the vote. The BJP eventually won the seat, while the TMC came in fourth. Following his arrest, angry locals in Falta vandalised Khan’s residence, office, and vehicle, expressing their frustration over his alleged intimidation tactics. The arrest is seen as a significant setback for the TMC, given Khan’s influence in the Diamond Harbour Lok Sabha constituency.
