Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi skipped the Independence Day ceremony at the Red Fort for the second consecutive year. Sources said both leaders were unhappy with the seating arrangement and protocol provided to them. Rahul Gandhi was invited to the ceremony, and the Defence Ministry said the seating was decided according to the government’s Table of Precedence. Under this system, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha holds a status equivalent to a Union Cabinet Minister. The dispute over seating arrangements dates back to 2024, when Rahul Gandhi was seated in the fifth row.
