A controversy regarding remarks on Muslim women has triggered a legal and political dispute in Kerala. Journalist Aparna Kurup was booked under charges including outraging religious feelings and promoting enmity following a debate on Big TV, where she questioned Sunni scholar Kanthapuram A.P. Aboobacker Musliyar’s statement that women should remain confined to their homes. Kurup issued an apology, and the channel removed the video. However, after Kurup lodged a complaint over alleged online threats following a post by Muslim leader Abdul Basit, the Indian Union Muslim League intervened. Subsequently, the Home Minister directed police not to take further action against Basit, sparking questions over unequal legal action.
