A political controversy has erupted over the singing of the full version of Vande Mataram at the inaugural ceremony of Jammu and Kashmir’s first International Film Festival. The complete three-minute-ten-second version of the national song was performed in the presence of Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah and National Conference president Farooq Abdullah, with everyone standing in respect. However, Congress general secretary K.C. Venugopal objected to the full version, arguing that it does not reflect the harmonious and pluralistic vision of India envisioned by the freedom fighters. The BJP has hit back, with Rajya Sabha MP and national spokesperson Sudhanshu Trivedi accusing the Congress of becoming the “Muslim League of the 21st century.” Another controversy has emerged in the Gujarat Assembly, where Congress MLA Imran Khedawala was accused of remaining seated while Vande Mataram was being sung. The Gujarat government has sought action, calling it a violation of parliamentary traditions.
