India’s foreign policy, from its inception, has been marked by a strong refusal to bow to American pressure.
Nehru’s Non-Alignment: Jawaharlal Nehru established a policy of non-alignment, explicitly stating that India would not compromise its hard-won freedom for material gain, frustrating the U.S. and its desire for allies.
Rejecting Military Aid: In 1954, Nehru declined military aid from the U.S., asserting that India wouldn’t accept help while opposing similar assistance to Pakistan, a move he saw as opportunistic.
Standing Firm Against Sanctions: When the U.S. threatened to cut off wheat supplies during the 1965 war, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri’s government refused to yield.
Resisting Naval Intimidation: During the 1971 Indo-Pak war, India, led by Indira Gandhi, stood strong against the U.S. naval fleet, which had been dispatched to intimidate it.
Post-Nuclear Test Resilience: In 1998, despite facing severe U.S.-led sanctions after its nuclear tests, India remained unwavering in its resolve, demonstrating its continued commitment to its national interests.
