In Mumbai’s Dadar, clashes broke out today between protestors and the police over the closure of kabutarkhanas. The action followed a Bombay High Court order to shut down these kabutarkhanas. Tension arose between agitated members of the Jain community and the police, as officers tried to stop them from removing the tarpaulin sheets placed over the kabutarkhana. Feeding pigeons in Mumbai has long been seen as a religious and cultural practice, especially among the Jain community. However, recent health concerns regarding respiratory illnesses caused by pigeon droppings have led to major action by the authorities.
